Welcome to Community Church of Honolulu

Our Mission

Welcome to the online home of Community Church of Honolulu! We are working hard to build a community of justice and grace grounded in the teachings of Jesus.

Here at CCH you will be welcomed by a congregation of people from all walks of life, babies to members in their 90s, newcomers and founding members of the church, people who feel pretty certain about their faith and a lot of us who bring our questions with us every single week. We stick together because we believe that communities of committed people can change the world to be more just, more loving, more grace-filled, and we want to be part of making that happen.

You’ll hear a welcome in worship that includes the phrase, “Wherever you are on your journey of life, you are welcome here.” And we mean that–no exceptions. We hope to welcome you in person or online soon!

  • July at CCH: The Church Has Left the Building!

Can you believe it's already July?! Your Community Connections Committee is looking forward to several service projects on July 13 and 20 as we explore what it means to be the church outside the building! We are excited to partner with some wonderful local nonprofit organizations:

    - Youth Outreach (YO!), a program of Waikiki Health, is a safe haven for houseless youth. We'll be cleaning and doing yard work at their drop-in center.

    - Ka ‘Ohu Hou O Manoa, part of Salvation Army, provides post-rehab housing for women and kids. We are putting together self-care baskets for their courageous moms.

    - River of Life Mission distributes food to people experiencing houselessness at multiple sites across Oahu. We'll be making Grace 2 Go snack bags for their ministry.

    - Susannah Wesley Community Center provides a multitude of services for immigrant families in need. We'll be volunteering at their location in Kalihi. Thanks to everyone who contributed donations or signed up to volunteer! We'll be following up with details for each project.

As a reminder, we will not have regular Sunday morning worship in July. Instead we have the following activities planned:

    - Sunday, July 6: Church Retreat - Worship at Camp Mokulēʻia as part of the Church Retreat.

    - Sunday, July 13: Service Projects - Meet at church at 9:00 a.m. for a blessing and split up either to carpool to YO! or stay on campus to put together Grace 2 Go bags.

    - Sunday, July 20: Service Projects - Meet at church at 9:00 a.m. for a blessing, then either drive to the Susannah Wesley Community Center or stay on campus to assemble self-care baskets.

    - Sunday, July 27: Celebration Potluck - Meet at church at 9:00 a.m. for special time of worship to reflect on "The Church Has Left the Building," followed by at celebration potluck in Stephen Mark Hall. Contact Arnold to sign up for the potluck. Please don't hesitate to contact one of the members of our committee if you have any questions. We look forward to serving with you in July!

  • July 2025

In the July 2025 Watchman, you’ll find Pastor Amy’s invitation for church to leave the building through a retreat at Camp Mokulēʻia, summer service projects, and a potluck celebration. The newsletter shares updates on transitions in property and facilities management and the arrival of Hawaii Meals on Wheels as a mission partner. Readers can explore details of July’s community service opportunities with local nonprofits and highlights from recent Aloha Hour gatherings celebrating birthdays and milestones. There’s also a reflection on the church’s ongoing Open and Affirming journey to become a more welcoming space for LGBTQ+ individuals. The issue features a new segment created by Brittney Oguan where church members have the spotlight and talk about their faith journeys. First up in spotlight: Ginny and Sanford Tom. Brittney has also created a Holy Highlights section, where she goes over events that have happened the previous month and upcoming classes.

Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, Senior Minister

Welcome to CCH! My name is Amy Butler and I have had the the great honor of serving the congregation at Community Church as Designated Pastor. July 1, 2025 we begin a new journey together as congregation and Settled Senior Minister. Whenever I look at a church website, I want to know what motivates the leaders, so here’s a little background about me.

I am a person of faith who has always been fascinated by this question: “What does it take to build a community that can change the world?” CCH is gifted to be living that grand experiment in our island home, a culture in which the values of Hawai’i infuse who we are: Aloha (love, respect) Lōkahi (harmony, unity) Mālama (to care for, to honor) Pono (goodness, morality) Po‘okela (greatest, to excel).

I grew up in Hawai’i and these values inform my work. My Christian faith has provided a professional framework for exploring the possibility and promise of that question. Since 2000 I’ve had the great honor of serving and loving four faith communities in various pastoral roles: St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans; Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, DC; and The Riverside Church in the City of New York.; National City Christian Church in Washington, DC. You can find out more about my background here.

To now be back in these beautiful islands with the lovely, lovely congregation at Community Church of Honolulu is a gift beyond words. Here I have found a community of people who welcome questions; who tenaciously build community; who value legacy while welcoming change; who are willing to take a chance on each other. We all know that being human is hard. Living in relationship is hard. Being the church is often really challenging. And, love wins in the end.

If you are looking for a community in which you will be welcomed unconditionally, loved lavishly, and challenged in ways that deepen your connection to God and to the people around you, I hope you’ll visit Community Church of Honolulu. And if you’d like to connect with me personally, please send me an email and let’s chat!

Me ke aloha and welcome!
