Welcome to Community Church of Honolulu

Our Mission

Welcome to the online home of Community Church of Honolulu! We are working hard to build a community of justice and grace grounded in the teachings of Jesus.

Here at CCH you will be welcomed by a congregation of people from all walks of life, babies to members in their 90s, newcomers and founding members of the church, people who feel pretty certain about their faith and a lot of us who bring our questions with us every single week. We stick together because we believe that communities of committed people can change the world to be more just, more loving, more grace-filled, and we want to be part of making that happen.

You’ll hear a welcome in worship that includes the phrase, “Wherever you are on your journey of life, you are welcome here.” And we mean that–no exceptions. We hope to welcome you in person or online soon!

  • Lenten Series:  A Questioning Faith

The season of Lent is a period of 40 days leading to Easter. During these weeks we are encouraged to look inward, to remember the frailty of our human lives, and to consider how it is we are choosing to live. In this community questions about faith are welcomed and encouraged; during the season of Lent we’ll be turning the mirror around and asking ourselves some hard questions. The gift of community is always the reminder that we are not alone, so as we ask these questions over the course of these next few weeks, we can work to summon the courage to answer them with honesty because we know we’re not on this journey alone. Welcome to the questions.

  • Upcoming Vote for Settled Pastor & Membership Participation Details

CCH council is so excited to accept the Rev. Dr. Amy Butler as the recommendation of our Pastoral Search Committee.  This candidate is now put forward for the congregation to consider as our next Settled Pastor.  I am asking everyone in our community to do three things in this important time:

    -          If you have been a member of CCH: Complete your membership form if you would like to continue to be an active member of Community Church in 2025.

    -          If you have been visiting CCH and would like to be a part of this process: Talk to Pastor Amy about joining as a member of Community Church of Honolulu for 2025.

    -          Save the Date on Sunday, April 6, 2025 and come to a Question and Answer session in the sanctuary.  We will have an abbreviated service then spend time with Pastor Amy, the Pastoral Search Committee, and Council leadership asking questions.

This is your official notice of a special congregational meeting onSunday, May 4, 2025 to vote for Settled Pastor directly after service in the sanctuary.

If you will not be in church on May 4th and would like to vote by proxy, please ask the deacons for a proxy form and give it to the person you’d like to have vote for you.  That person MUST have the signed form with them at the special congregational meeting to vote on your behalf.

    Deadlines:

    -          Membership forms: Received by the office by Sunday, April 27, 2025.

    -          New Member: Let Pastor Amy know by Sunday, April 6, 2025

    -          Proxy form: Give it to your proxy to bring to the Special Congregational meeting on May 4th.

Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, Designated Senior Minister

Welcome to CCH! My name is Amy Butler and I have the great honor of serving the congregation at Community Church as interim pastor. Whenever I look at a church website, I want to know what motivates the leaders, so here’s a little background about me.

I am a person of faith who has always been fascinated by this question: “What does it take to build a community that can change the world?” CCH is gifted to be living that grand experiment in our island home, a culture in which the values of Hawai’i infuse who we are: Aloha (love, respect) Lōkahi (harmony, unity) Mālama (to care for, to honor) Pono (goodness, morality) Po‘okela (greatest, to excel).

I grew up in Hawai’i and these values inform my work. My Christian faith has provided a professional framework for exploring the possibility and promise of that question. Since 2000 I’ve had the great honor of serving and loving four faith communities in various pastoral roles: St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans; Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, DC; and The Riverside Church in the City of New York.; National City Christian Church in Washington, DC. You can find out more about my background here.

To now be back in these beautiful islands with the lovely, lovely congregation at Community Church of Honolulu is a gift beyond words. Here I have found a community of people who welcome questions; who tenaciously build community; who value legacy while welcoming change; who are willing to take a chance on each other. We all know that being human is hard. Living in relationship is hard. Being the church is often really challenging. And, love wins in the end.

If you are looking for a community in which you will be welcomed unconditionally, loved lavishly, and challenged in ways that deepen your connection to God and to the people around you, I hope you’ll visit Community Church of Honolulu. And if you’d like to connect with me personally, please send me an email and let’s chat!

My deep aloha and welcome!
